Writing - Comparison Paragraph / Essay Guidelines

  • Parts of a comparison paragraph / essay:
  1. Definition statement of the items being compared.
  2. General statement about the similarities and differences.
  3. Write about each criterion of similarity and its details. (This begins with the connector expression : To begin with the similarities,..).
  4. Write about each criterion of difference and its details.(Begin with a new sentence stating the change of topic - see examples below).
Examples:
a. On the other hand, the two computers differ in several ways.
b. As for the differences, the two computers differ in a number of ways.
c. Regarding the differences, the two computers are different in a few ways.

  • Connectors of similarity:
    1. X and Y are both.....
    2. X and Y both have
    3. Both X and Y have...
    4. X has ............ , and this is also true of Y.
    5. X has ............ , and the same is true of Y.
    6. X and Y are similar in that they have .....
    7. X and Y have some feaures in common.
  • Connectors of contrast:
To combine two sentences into one:
1. But. (Can be used in the middle of the sentence).
2. Although.(Can be used in the middle or at the beginning of the sentence).
3. Whereas.(Can be used in the middle or at the beginning of sentence).
4. While.(Can be used in the middle or at the beginning of sentence).

With separate and complete sentences:
1. However.
2. In contrast.
3. On the other hand.
  • Connectors of Addition:
1. In addition.
2. Furthermore.
  • Expression of Quantity:
ONE : There is only one stated similarities / difference,......
TWO : There are few similarities / differences.

MORE THAN TWO:
a. There are a few similarities / differences.
b. There are several similarities / differences.
c. There are a number of similarities / differences.
d. There are some similarities / differences.
e. There are a lot of similarities / differences.
f. There are many similarities / differences.
